Monday March 22 2004 - Life sciences in society today: Modern Biology and Visions of Humanity
On 22-23 March in Genoa – European Capital of Culture 2004 – a unique conference will bring together scientists and leading personalities from the arts, humanities and politics to debate the influence of life sciences on education and culture in today’s society. The high-level conference is organised by a group of personal advisors to Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin, the European Group on Life Sciences (EGLS). A book entitled “Modern Biology and Visions of Humanity”, will also be launched at the event. The book reflects the views of some of the panellists and will be published in English, French and Italian.
Friday January 16 2004 - Programme for Genoa 2004 European Capital of Culture presented in Turin
The programme for Genoa 2004 European Capital of Culture was presented this afternoon in Turin. The event was hosted in the prestigious Salone degli Svizzeri in the Palazzo Reale by Francesco Pernice, Regional Superintendent responsible for Architectural Heritage and the Landscape in Piedmont. Also present were Onorato Castellino, President of the Compagnia di San Paolo (San Paolo Company) which organised the event, Sergio Chiamparino, Mayor of Turin, Giuseppe Perìcu, Mayor of Genoa, and Germano Celant, Cultural and Artistic Director of Genoa 2004. The aim of the meeting was to discuss how Genoa has presented itself internationally since 1998 as a modern “European Capital of Culture” hosting the various events scheduled for 2004. The City of Turin is faced with a similar task as it prepares to host the 2006 Winter Olympics.
Tuesday December 17 - MARCO POLO. Genoa the gateway to the Orient: tracing the past along the Silk Route
This exhibition (free and open to the public) reconstructs and traces the route of the great Italian traveller Marco Polo through the images of one of the greatest photographers of modern times, Michael Yamashita from Japan. Yamashita has been supported in his historical-aesthetic research by the international staff of the prestigious National Geographic organisation. The exhibition has been put together by National Geographic and is presented in Genoa by the Department of Asiatic Studies/CE.L.S.O in collaboration with the three local government institutions (the Region of Liguria, Province of Genoa and City Council of Genoa) and the University of Genoa. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will be inaugurated on Friday 19th December 2003 at 5.30 p.m. in Palazzo San Giorgio.
Tuesday December 16 - 10.000 flags for the Gaslini
Genoa 2004 European Capital of Culture is organising a charity sale in aid of the Fondazione Gaslini and, in particular, towards the creation of a Mediterranean Insititute for Childhood. 10,000 flags with the GeNova04 logo will be on offer from December 20 in Via XX Settembre (in front of the Mondadori and Feltrinelli bookshops), in the Galleria Mazzini and in the main shopping centres in the city (IPERCOOP, IKEA, FIUMARA). The minimum donation is €5. We invite all citizens of Genoa to display the GeNova04 flag from their windows as a sign of their rediscovered pride in our changing city.
Monday 15th December 2003 - Bookings open for the Inaugural Concert of Genoa 2004 European Capital of Culture
Tickets for the Official Inaugural Concert of Genoa 2004 European Capital of Culture will be on sale from Friday 12th December at the Carlo Felice Theatre ticket office. The concert will take place on Thursday January 8 2004 and features the tenor Josè Carreras, the soprano Michela Sburlati, the flautist Andrea Griminelli and the pianist Lorenzo Bava The concert aims to raise funds for the creation of a Mediterranean Institute for Childhood. This will be a permanent institute designed to promote both the rights of the child and research into infant needs as part of the Euro-Mediterranean project supported by the Fondazione Gaslini in Genoa. This official opening of Genoa 2004 European Capital of Culture will be attended by Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, and representatives of both the Italian government and local institutions.
Thursday november 27 2003 - Collaboration between Genoa 2004 and the Barcelona Cultural Forum
In 2004 Barcelona will host the Universal Forum of Cultures while Genoa will be European Capital of Culture. In order to develop the links between these international events, Joan Clos (Mayor of Barcelona and President of the Forum) and Giuseppe Perìcu (Mayor of Genoa and President of the Genoa 2004 Committee) met on Wednesday, November 26th. Genoa 2004 and the Forum will work closely together to publicise events in both cities. Clos highlighted the importance of the Naumon boat project by La Fura dels Baus from Barcelona which will open the New Year’s festivities in Genoa before travelling to Athens and Barcelona later in the year. Giuseppe Perìcu expressed his admiration for Barcelona’s urban planning model which Genoa has studied as part of its own urban regeneration project.
Wednesday November 26 2003 - The conference Da una capitale all’altra: Graz 2003 – Genova 2004 (“From one capital to another: Graz 2003 – Genoa 2004”) finishes today.
The conference Da una capitale all’altra: Graz 2003 – Genova 2004 which finishes today marks the beginning of initiatives organised by the Diocese of Genoa for Genoa 2004 European Capital of Culture. It also marks the succession between the Church and the Christian Community in Graz, which was European Capital of Culture this year, and the Church in Genoa. Amongst those speaking at the conference were Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (Archbishop of Genoa), Monsignor Egon Kapellari (Bishop of Graz), the Hon. Giuliano Urbani (Italian Minister for Culture), Prof. Giuseppe Perìcu (Mayor of Genoa) and Siegfried Nagl (Mayor of Graz). Monday November 24 2003 - Presentation of the Programme in Bruselles
The Genoa 2004 Programme will be presented to members of the European Parliament on Wednesday December 3 in the Yehudi Menuhin room of the Paul-Henri Spaak building in Brussels. The Mayor of Genoa and President of the Genoa 2004 Committee, Giuseppe Perìcu, and Ambassador Umberto Vattani, Italian Permanent Representative to the European Union, will officially present the programme of events and exhibitions scheduled in Genoa for its year as European Capital of Culture. Also present will be Claudio Scajola (Minister responsible for Implementation of the Programme for Government), Sandro Biasotti (President of the Liguria Region and member of the Genoa 2004 Committee), Alessandro Repetto (President of the Province of Genoa and member of the Genoa 2004 Committee), Renzo Imbeni and Guido Podestà (Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament) and Viviane Reding (European Commissioner for Education and Culture). Following the official presentation, there will be a short string concert organised in collaboration with the Carlo Felice Opera House from Genoa. The day before the presentation, Davide Viziano, President of Genova 2004 s.r.l. will meet representatives from the European Parliament’s Cultural Commission to prepare the event.
Monday November 24 2003 - Genova 2004 at the Barcelona Cultural Forum
On Wednesday, 26th November 2003, Joan Clos (Mayor of the Barcelona) and Xavier Marcet (Communications Director of the Barcelona Cultural Forum) will meet Giuseppe Perìcu (Mayor of Genoa) and Enrico da Molo (Managing Director of Genova 2004 s.r.l) at the Forum’s headquarters in Barcelona. A press conference with the Spanish media will be held following this private meeting. On the agenda are plans for a presentation by the Barcelona Cultural Forum in Genoa in spring 2004.
Monday November 24 2003 - Genoa 2004 in Rome and Venice
November and December will see a series of promotional events for Genoa European Capital of Culture. On Friday December 5th 2003, Enrico Da Molo (Managing Director of Genova 2004 s.r.l) will present the Programme for Genoa European Capital of Culture at the second national book fair for small and medium-sized publishing houses Più Libri Più Liberi in Rome. There will be a stand representing Genoa 2004 at the fair from Thursday November 4 to Monday December 8. Genoa 2004 will also have a stand at the seventh Salone dei Beni e della Attività Culturali in Venice from Thursday 27th to Sunday 30th November 2003.
